Every morning, doctors in the hospital round on their patients. Rounds are when doctors on your child’s care team get together and discuss your child. It usually takes place by the pediatric unit or PICU doctors. Specialists may also be present at rounds, or conduct their own version of rounds. During rounds, the team will give an update on each system and review the plan of care and any plans for discharge. Rounds typically occur in the morning hours. A resident (or Attending if no resident is on duty) will likely come around to preround on your child to prepare them for rounds. In prerounds, the doctor will examine your child and may ask if you have any updates or questions for the team.

Who is at rounds?

The resident and Attending on duty will be at rounds. Your bedside nurse should will also be at rounds. residents and fellows in attendance. You may also see the charge nurse, dietician, pharmacist, case manager, or other team members depending on your child’s needs. Parents are entitled, and encouraged, to attend daily rounds.

What to expect

  • A resident assigned to your child’s case will present their case to the rest of the team
  • The bedside nurse will present on your child
  • The team will come up with a plan of care for the day, consulting with each other as needed
  • The team will discuss any plans for discharge
  • The team should ask if you have any input or questions

Things that will be reviewed

  • Any medications or treatment plans your child is receiving and update dosing as needed
